Louis was born healthy and came home quickly, everything seemed fine at first. But his rapid breathing worried us, so we went to the doctor when he was 12 days old. That’s when we learned he had a large atrial septal defect (ASD). Closely followed by pediatric cardiologists, he eventually needed open-heart surgery around his first birthday, since the hole kept growing and his heart had become the size of an adult’s.
The surgery went well. Just 24 hours later, Louis was already standing up, and only five days later he was climbing the stairs at home.
