Philippe was born with Tetralogy of Fallot at Matane Hospital on April 7, 2014, at 5:19 p.m. This heart defect had gone undetected during the 20-week ultrasound. Right after birth, Philippe was immediately taken into care due to respiratory distress. He was transferred by ambulance—without us but accompanied by the medical team in Matane—to the hospital in Rimouski. There, Dr. Dionne diagnosed the condition and arranged for Philippe to be airlifted to CHUL that same evening.
We arrived at CHUL the next day in the late afternoon and met with Dr. Chetaille, a cardiologist, who informed us that Philippe would need open-heart surgery. At just 7 days old, our little one underwent his first open-heart procedure, performed by Dr. Perron—nicknamed “Magic Fingers.”
Volunteers from the En Cœur Foundation were there to support us emotionally through what felt like a rollercoaster of emotions. They also told us about the services available. We were able to stay at the Manoir Ronald Mc Donald, with the foundation covering the costs for our 18-day stay in Quebec City before Philippe was transferred back to the hospital in Rimouski for another 5 days. They also provided a breast pump, meal vouchers for the hospital cafeteria, and parking reimbursement—all of which helped us focus entirely on supporting our son without the added stress of financial burdens.
It was an incredibly difficult time, but thanks to the En Cœur Foundation, we felt supported and understood throughout the journey.
Philippe continues to have annual check-ups with his cardiologist, who is just as exceptional as ever.
During his first surgery, the medical team had already told us that Philippe would likely need a second operation around adolescence. But at his 4-year annual appointment, we learned that he would need another open-heart surgery to have a valve installed.
Once again, the En Cœur Foundation was there for us. For this second surgery in Quebec City, we stayed 9 days at the Manoir Ronald Mc Donald, with the Foundation’s support. Their presence makes a world of difference for families with children suffering from heart conditions.
By sharing our story, we want to offer hope—because today, our beautiful Philippe is 11 years old. He is our superhero. Sensitive and full of resilience, he brings joy to those around him with his great sense of humor.
Despite his heart condition, Philippe lives without restrictions and is very active. He plays several sports—basketball, baseball, football—and he even rides motocross.
Philippe is growing up wonderfully, and it’s all thanks to the doctors, the Foundation, and every staff member involved in his care. We are deeply grateful—thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
Living with a sick child is never easy. It comes with so much worry and uncertainty. But don’t lose hope! Our children are true little warriors—ready to face any storm that comes their way.
